How can we resist when the fight for humanity and human rights is increasingly being criminalised in many countries? Researchers and artists share their stories.
The volume Down by Law: Criminalisation, Solidarity and Survival in Europe shows how people act, resist and build solidarity in criminalised environments. Each story is told by a researcher and an artist working together, and the volume brings together graphic novels on topics such as abortion, drug use, sea rescue in the Mediterranean, and more. Todd Sekuler (University of Zurich) and artist Joris Bas Backer have collaborated on the topic of hate speech in Europe, Agata Dziuban (Jagiellonian University, Krakow) and artist Aleksandra ‘Sasza’ Stachowska provide insights into the sex work of migrant women in Poland.
Moderator: Gina Dellagiacoma
In cooperation with the Institute for Popular Cultures at the University of Zurich, as part of the research project ‘CrimScapes: Navigating Citizenship through European Landscapes of Criminalisation’.
