You know that feeling when you long for someone so much that it doesn’t even stop when that person is right in front of you and you can touch them, hug them, kiss them, grab them? You know that feeling when you can never get close enough, that the other person is always too far away no matter how near they are? Yeah, probably. After two years of physical distancing from the pandemic, the craving for closeness is no longer simply an intimate need – it’s the trait of a generation.

It’s a longing that can’t be simply satiated but rather just keeps on growing the more it gets fulfilled. You need more and more, you need to get closer and closer, deeper and deeper into the texture of the other being, the other body. And when you are very close, can you actually bear it? Or do you risk losing yourself in the other, dissolving completely? And if so, would that be so bad?

British playwright Sarah Kane wrote Crave in the late 1990s. Now, 25 years later, Christopher Rüping is bringing this great, lonely script to the Pfauen.
